AVG Antivirus (Leioog)
Website: http://free.grisoft.com/
Direct download: http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/setup/avg71free_385a729.exe
Notes:
Effective and Free, can scan email, however full system scan is not complete system.
Not windows X64 compatible

Bit Defender (Stubbie)
Website: http://www.bitdefender.com
Direct download: http://www.bitdefender.com/site/view/Download-Free-Products.html
Notes:
Another free Antivirus, good for system scans, however has a tendancy to (i assume) auto update itself regualarly
(more than a few times daily), which has the effect of minimising the current game.

Best to have bitdefender for system scans, and to have AVG running while your using the computer in my opinion.

Online virus scanner (GFNippel)
Website: http://housecall65.trendmicro.com/
Notes:
usefull if your PCs normal anti-virus has been attacked by a virus, as this is an online virus scanner,
t shouldnt be affected by any virus on your computer.

Is it true that bitdefender does not work together with ad-aware on your system and that it is a trial version only?

*bump* Seems AVG is moving to Version 9 - so far i have had issues with two XP - based machines, so I am looking for an alternative one. Any suggestions for a free AV that isnt AVG?

Free version of Avast. http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

It does not include mail scanning, AFAIK.

Avast Antivirus
Website: www.avast.com
Direct download: http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/setupeng.exe
Notes:
Avast as anti virus is by far the best Free anti virus I've encountered out there

bitdefender is a nice anti spyware/adware program However even thou it's job is similar to anti viruses it's important to know that it is not the same.

Malwarebytes AntiMalware

Website: http://www.malwarebytes.org/www.avast.com
Direct Download: Could not find
Notes:
and again this is only against Mal-ware which again is different from viruses.

Only thing I dislike about the free version of Avira is the constant nagging popups to get the full version....

If you have a Barclays bank account their internet banking service will issue you with a free copy of Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 (link is on their internet banking page)
Alternatively if you have a HSBC account, they will offer you McAfee Security Centre.

Both are pretty secure... I personally preferred the Kaspersky 2009 edition but if you're running Windows 7 you need Kaspersky 2010
